What are the benefits of cast iron drainage applications?

Cast iron is the preferred drainage material of many specifiers. Its inherent strength, durability, ease of fitting, fire resistance, low coefficient of thermal expansion and its low noise transmission properties cannot be matched by modern plastics.

What is the best way to cut aluminium?

A chop/mitre saw, with a thin blade and plenty of teeth to get a fine cut. After the cut you will want to deburr the edges and apply touch up paint to protect the aluminium.

Does aluminium corrode when left unprotected?

Only when in contact with naturally aggressive metals and other substances. However, preventative measures are normally available (please seek expert advice from Alumasc Technical Services).

Aluminium is a non-corrosive metal. Although a natural oxidation effect occurs on unprotected aluminium, the process actually protects the metal from further corrosion. Some specifiers request plain aluminium to make a feature of the oxidised aluminium.

BSEN12056 calls for a 50% reduction in design capacity if balloon leafguards are fitted.

What maintenance is required on aluminium products?

Only periodic maintenance is required in accordance with good maintenance procedures. Polyester-coated aluminium requires only a warm soapy water solution to bring back the original appearance. Twice a year (once in the Autumn and again in the Spring) we recommend that gutters and joint integrity are checked, removing any collected gutter debris.

What grating connection is used on cast iron floor outlets?

4” NPSM threaded

What gradient should SML pipework fall?

This depends on the flow rate required but is usually between 1:40 – 1:100

Why does the two-way outlet flow rate differ so much when installed horizontally?

When the outlet is installed vertically gravity assist in draining the outlet, whereas when installed horizontally this reduces the flow rate as gravity is not assisting as much and friction also occurs which slows the rate down.

Why are roof outlets tested at 35mm head of water?

This is the industry British standard and is the same for all rainwater outlets manufactured. Also, this is so the outlets can be directly compared to one and other.

Are there situations affecting the use of Harmer shower drains?

Harmer shower drains should never be used with a softened water supply; the salts in the water are aggressive to surface finishes causing harmless discolouration to nickel bronze grating components but progressive surface oxidation of unprotected aluminium surfaces.

When should I use a roof outlet with a dome grate?

Roof outlets fitted with raised or domical gratings are less prone to blockage than outlets fitted with flat gratings.

What is a Harmer AV roof outlet?

A patented baffle arrangement and funnel shaped outlet allows the outlet to function to the maximum level allowed by BS EN 12056 (33% full pipe). Thus fewer downpipes and/or higher factor of safety is offered to the building.

Are Harmer roof outlets suitable for use with syphonic rainwater systems?

No – Harmer roof outlets are designed specifically for gravity fed drainage systems.

What do I do if there is no external stop end for my gutter range?

Cut the spigot off the gutter length and install the internal stop end on contemporary ranges or an external union will need to be ordered to connect the internal stop end on heritage systems

Does the 1.83m cast aluminium lengths include the socket in the length or not?

Yes, the 1.83m length includes the cast socket.

Do you manufacture internal gutters?

We manufacture and install internal gutters which are concealed within a fascia and soffit system, however we do not manufacture or supply parapet or valley gutters.

Should I fit balloon leafguards or gutterguard type products?

Alumasc does not recommend the fitting of any leafguard products, as they can have a detrimental effect on performance, especially when blocked with leaves.

Do you provide data sheets or BIM objects?
